NON-SPEC SLIP TANKS

Please note that the 2 year permit for non-spec slip tanks expires on December 31st. After this date, the new regulations will be in full effect.Details can be found at http://www.tc.gc.ca/tdg/publications/menu.htm  A short summary is listed below...

  • Tanks used for diesel are exempt if the total capacity is less than 450 litres.  Any gasoline container over 30 litres must meet the new regulations.
  • New diesel slip tanks (over 450 litres) should have a certification plate specifying that it is manufactured to the UN standard CGSB 43.146
  • If built before 2003, the ULC standard C142.13 is acceptable until 2010 but the testing intervals included in the above standard must be met (every 60 months from the date of manufacture).
  • There is a provision for testing of non-spec tanks (visual inspection, leak test and pressure test) but this must be done annually at a facility registered by Transport Canada.  If the container passes the tests, a non-specification name plate is attached.

WINTER GAS

Petro-Canada is now offering an improved version of the popular "Winter Gas".

  • The de-icer prevents freeze-up problems due to condensation.
  • Problems with valve sticking, common in colder climates, are greatly reduced.
  • Cold weather starting is improved and deposit control additives keep the fuel systems clean.
  • The extra protection comes at no extra cost to you.  Fortunately we have also seen some significant decreases in gas prices since the peak in October.  Wholesale rack prices for gasoline have dropped by more than $0.12/litre in this time period.  Hopefully there is more to come!

DYED FUEL REGULATIONS

If you are a purchaser of dyed fuel, please ensure you have submitted your "Coloured Fuel Account Certification" form (http://www.rev.gov.bc.ca/ctb/forms/0438FILL.pdf).  As a fuel seller, we will soon be required to cease delivery and restrict access (ie. shut off cardlock access to marked fuel pumps) for any customers that do not have a completed form on file with us.

NEW DIESEL ENGINE OIL REQUIREMENTS

New heavy duty diesel engines designed to meet current emission specifications are proving to be very harsh on engine oils (heavy soot production in EGR engines and very high injector pressures and heat in non-EGR engines).  Experts are recommending either shorter oil change intervals or the use of premium engine oils designed to work well in these new conditions.

If you are not already doing so, you may want to consider implementing a regular oil analysis program to track the condition of your engine oil.  This may lead you to review options such as Petro-Canada's Duron XL 15w40, designed specifically for high soot, high heat applications.  Details can be found at the link below.
